Is a Tech-Free Classroom Good for Modern Kids?

In a world where technology reigns supreme, more and more schools are placing technological and electronic skills at the forefront. As such, modern education is seeing more technology in the classroom, such as tablets and computers, and fewer tactile activities.

Yet, one place you won’t find a stream of electronics is in Montessori schools. Traditional Montessori focuses solely on learning using one’s own hands and concrete objects – no electronic equipment is required. In fact, it’s one of the many benefits of Montessori education.

That begs the question – is a tech-free classroom a good option for modern kids, or is technology in schools (traditional schooling) a better choice?

Pros and Cons of Technology in the Classroom

To help better understand whether or not technology in schools is beneficial, you need to be aware of the pros and cons of technology in the classroom.

Pro: More Engaging

When given a choice, most children are going to opt for a flashy and interactive computer or tablet screen compared to the average toy. That said, electronic devices have the perk of being more engaging to even the youngest minds.

Pro: Endless Learning Possibilities

Books, toys, and activities can be limited. Yet, when it comes to electronic devices, the possibilities for learning are endless. Whether watching a video about animals or taking a virtual trip to the local museum, electronics open the door to many learning adventures.

Pro: Prepares for the Future

Technology is continuing to advance and is becoming a part of day-to-day lives from beginning to end. Having access to electronics and learning the fundamentals of technology prepares children, even young ones, for future endeavors.

Con: Limits Socialization

Staring at a screen means there is less of a chance of socialization, which is an imperative skill for students, especially those in preschool and elementary. When social needs are met, young children will be able to foster empathy, learn the concept of teamwork, boost their confidence levels, and improve overall language skills for the future.

Con: Discourages Creativity

When it comes to electronics, most of the work is done for you. Most of the time, there is little need to use one’s own creativity or imagination for problem-solving. That said, overuse of electronics at a young age can discourage creativity, which can hinder overall development.

Con: Less Memorable Learning Experience

Learning something at the lightning-fast pace of electronics can be exciting and straightforward, but it doesn’t always equate to in-depth and memorable learning. Learning without electronic devices allows for more depth and valuable knowledge, especially for young children who can learn using their hands.

Con: Distracting

One of the most significant drawbacks to technology in the classroom is that it is pretty distracting, especially to young students who are already prone to distractions. This results in less learning throughout the day and may even cause distress in students who would rather play on electronics than learn using their hands.
